Will shortening the ferral on my cue have less deflection?
I’m working on making my McDermott shaft shoot with less deflection .I had it cut down at the tip to 11.75 mm with the same tapper and it shoots much better than when it was 13mm so I’m wondering what affect shortening the ferral will do.
Carter isn’t really on the right track with his assumption about reducing the length of the ferrule. It is true that lower end mass on a cue will provide lower deflection, but simply cutting down the ferrule doesn’t really do that. The ferrule material is similar is weight to the wood of the shaft, so cutting down the ferrule will have little to no affect on the end mass of the cue, and likely will not decrease a cue’s deflection.
Predator shafts and the like have ferrules made of softer, lighter, and thinner material than your typical cue, which is part of the reason these shafts deflect less. Shorter ferrules are used to produce a more consistent hit, since the softer ferrules will tend to bend and compress more at impact.
The only way to reliably reduce the deflection of a cue is to reduce the diameter of the shaft, which you have already done. Replacing the ferrule completely may help a bit, but I doubt it would provide a noticeable change. Cutting down the ferrule may provide a more solid hit though, which you may prefer.
If you really want a low deflection shaft I’d suggest investing in a Predator Z2. Otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Just learn to play with what you have, you don’t need a low deflection cue to play well.
