Saturday April 5, 2008 – 42 of Colorado's best pool players took there shot at the fat purse offered by the Colorado Cue Club's yearly $1,000 added barbox 8-Ball championship, the Pot O' Gold. In attendance were notables such as Mark Haddad, Dave Gomez, Bill Skinner, Melissa Little, Bob Keller, Rick Fields, and defending champion Sam Cordova. The format every year is races to 6, alternate breaks, and double elimination with the winner taking the top payout plus free entry into the Colorado 9-Ball Championship.
In the battle for the hot seat a sharp shooting Greg Way beat out Bill Skinner 6-5 sending Bill to face the winner of Sam Cordova versus Dave Gomez. Gomez, coming off an impressive 2nd place finish at the Four Bears tourney, came out blazing with a 4-0 lead. But the defending champ Cordova turned the tables on Dave winning 6 straight games for the 6-4 win. That set up a titanic match up between Sam Cordova and Bill Skinner. Eyewitnesses reported this match taking over two hours and going hill-hill with Bill Skinner coming away with the victory.
Bill got his second crack at Greg Way but the result was the same. Greg won it 6-4 and took the $900 first prize plus the big cake and free entry into the $1,500 Added Colorado 9-Ball Championship on May 3.
The Pot O' Gold and the Colorado 9-Ball Championship are both part of the Cue Club's annual series of tournaments, the "Springboard to the Nationals". Learn more about them at www.coloradocueclub.net or keep your eye on the AZ Billiards tourney forums.
